چکیده مقاله
For decades, dams around the world have been removed due to safety concerns, losses in reservoir volume and other reasons. After years of dam operation, sediments are deposited in the reservoirs and it is necessary to investigate how sediments are transferred downstream following dam removal. This research analyzes and predicts the effects of removing the dam on the transport of sediments. This is done through a case study of the Zonouz dam in the East Azerbaijan Province. A one-dimensional numerical model called DREAM1 is used to predict sediment transport. The numerical modeling of sediment transport following the dam removal was carried out for wet, dry, average and recorded discharges of the Zonouz dam for short-term and long-term periods. The modeling results indicated a fast rate of erosion in the early years which decreases over time. Further, the dispersion process dominates translation in the evolution of the pulse and the eroded sediments are transported up to 11 kilometers downstream over the long term. Results indicate that in the hydrological conditions of the Zonouz dam, after seven years, about 82% of the sediments will be eroded.
